Frequently asked questions
How is PAYE calculated in South Africa?
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is worked out on your annual salary using SARS's progressive tax brackets. Your applicable rebate (and medical tax credit, if any) is then subtracted, and the remaining annual tax is divided by 12 to give your monthly tax deduction.
What is the tax-free threshold for 2026/27?
For the 2027 tax year (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027) you pay no income tax if you earn below R99,000 a year (under 65), R153,250 (65–74), or R171,300 (75+).
How much UIF do I pay?
UIF is 1% of your monthly salary, capped at the R17,712 monthly ceiling. The most you'll pay is R177.12 per month, regardless of how much you earn above that.
What is the medical tax credit for 2027?
The monthly medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 for the taxpayer, R752 for the taxpayer plus one dependant, and R254 for each additional dependant. It reduces your tax, not your taxable income.
Disclaimer: This calculator is an estimate for salaried employees with a fixed monthly income, based on the official SARS 2026/27 tax tables and rebates (published 25 February 2026). It does not account for retirement fund contributions, travel allowances, fringe benefits, overtime, bonuses, or the additional medical expenses credit, all of which can change your actual PAYE. It is not tax or financial advice. Always confirm your figures with SARS or a registered tax practitioner.
